CSCE 431: Software Engineering

Call for Projects

We're looking for local non-profit organizations who need free cloud-based software services developed for them. A software service is one that runs in the cloud and is accessed via a web browser (e.g., from a desktop, laptop, tablet or phone), in the same manner of Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc. It is NOT a mobile App. It is software running on a free server (heroku.com) that you access from your browser.

The software will be developed as class projects by teams of 5-6 students. The total amount of student effort on the project will be about 12-person weeks. Project will start in mid Feb and be completed by the first week of May.

Here are some example projects done by the class in Spring 2016:

• Health For All -- Donor Management System
• Boy Scouts of America Troop 1300 -- Flag Management System
• Kindergarten++ Childhood Testing & Data Analysis Platform
• Website of the School of Verite Tae Kwon Do
• Patient Care Coordinator (managing health related activities and appointments)
• Scotty’s House -- Online Volunteer/Intern Application

The customers were generally happy with their results.

Non-Profit Contacts

The projects will be selected by the students (i.e., the project team). The actual details of the project will be worked out when you meet with the project team.

We are expecting 25-30 projects depending on the number of registered students.

The non-profit contact(s) would:

• Meet with the development team so that the team can identify the functions that the system should perform.
• Meet with the development team so that the team can sketch out a user interface and develop a "storyboard" of how the interface works.
• Meet with the team periodically (perhaps every two weeks) to try out the software, and provide feedback on prioritizing additional features.
• Participate in a two-minute video interview about the resulting software, both at the beginning of the project (discussing what you want), and then at the end (discussing what you got). See an example interview at end of nurse vacation scheduler.
• Provide a final evaluation of the project, which will be used in grading.

Meetings would take place whenever and wherever is convenient for the non-profit contact(s).
